2012, who knew?

Well, here we are. *Looks around* Mm hmm.

I don't have anything spectacular planned just yet. No ground trembling New Year's resolutions. I guess I'm just fed up and tired of disappointments. These last couple years have sucked mainly due to the down-turned economy. Not to say I'm giving up. Oh no, no, my dearies, not at all. I just figure if I don't have massively high expectations then I won't be devastated when something doesn't go the way I planned. Right? Sounds reasonable, I think. I am trying to be realistic here. Maybe it's just tax time blues. I did make less this past year than the year before, and that wasn't much to begin with. 2011 generally kind of sucked all around. I'm not going to go into detail but some things were salvageable and many not so much. 2011, year of the MEH.

Although, with me being a tad maudlin and all, I must say that I do have the most fantastically supportive and wonderful husband. If not for him I'd probably still be unloading trucks and (unsuccessfully) dealing with large crowds in soul-sucking retail hell. He keeps me reasonably sane, somewhat-willingly warms my feet, replies with "the eyebrow" to any outburst I may or may not have, makes me tea, and supports any and all artistic or educational endeavors. No, you can't have him. I do not share well with others. Mine! It still amazes me he's put up with my special brand of nuttiness (I'm an artist, it can't be helped and it's not necessarily a bad thing) for 9 years. NINE! Wow. So there, there's something good. Here's to 2012 being better! Hopefully.

Well, off I go. I've got some headbands to list. They're remakes of past styles but, as always, super cute! New styles will come as soon as I can afford a fabric run.

After-Christmas Batling Attack!

Okay so I can't give my nieces zombies for Christmas (yet). Well, one of them might be down with the zombies and other creepy cuteness but her mother would not. So, moving on! Here are a couple of the cuddly-sugarplum-cute *twitch* I attempted for this holiday.

What do you think? Personally, I think they border on maniacal but maybe that's just me. And, if so, I didn't mean for it, they just happened that way. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Hopefully my sis/sis in law won't lock them away in a closet somewhere. Or, me.

More Custom Pocket sized Zombie

I'm pretty sure it all started with this guy and went horribly, horribly wrong from there. The Not-so-fresh traditional zombie. Check out those delish "leather" (aka embossed felt) pants! Just don't get too close, he looks kinda hungry.

Next up, we've got another crazed Santa on the loose...

...and his Elf-y minion! If you hear a jingle bell chiming... RUN.

Ahwoooo! Man, that is one pissed off Burlesque Girl and I'd steer clear if I were you. One minute she putting on the best burly show of her life and the next thing she knows her rabid fans, well, turned out to be truly rabid.

And, here's the poor little nerd that just wanted to see what was under those black rosettes. His mom's going to kill him over the state of his clothes! At least he didn't break his glasses or loose his pocket protector [Yes, I really made a miniature pocket protector].

Custom Pocket sized Zombies!

This was definitely the most fun custom zombie ornament request I've had to date. It all started with Party Girl Teri (in the black dress on the right). Apparently she whispered sweet nothings about me to her new owner. Who then decided she needed a small army of Zombies for her office Christmas tree. How damn cool is that? Very.

So, next thing I know I've got a message asking if I'd whip up 6 --no, 7!-- more. I loved the ideas so much I stopped working on my hubby's coat (sorry, love!) and dove right in.

Santa and Elf Zombies, Burlesque Dancer Zombie with a feather fan, Nerd Zombie with glasses and a pocket protector, the more traditional Green Zombie in "leather" pants, And, last but not least...

Doctor Horrible and Captain Hammer!

Apparently the other Zombies have a bone to pick with Horrible and Hammer. Who knew?

Red-headed, Green-eyed... Angel!

This little cutie is flying around my workroom playing tag with the Love Monkey and Batlings.

It would great if someone would a adopt this sweet girl. Then maybe the Batlings will stop trying to use chop sticks and my hair as a Maypoles, at her encouragement. Probably unlikely but one can hope.
She is a bit of an exhibitionist as you can see and her booty is completely bare. But then, what cherub doesn't run around in only a ribbon, right?
She enjoys hanging out in Christmas trees, flittering around windows and rearview mirrors.

White Rabbit Art Doll

He's late for a very important date! With you. He really needs someone to serve him a spot of calming tea. The whole Wunderland thing still has him in a really tizzy.

♦ Height: Approximately 14.5" standing (not including those long ears!) & 10" sitting

His arms and legs are shunt-jointed with metal buttons & embroidery floss making him semi-poseable. His eyes are layered button. Mr. Rabbit's body is a printed white Cotton that makes me think of frost on a window, and has striped dark pink Jacquard inner ears. His vest is gold Brocade on one side and lined in grey Cotton blend. A matching snazzy bowtie is made of the same materials as his vest plus a little black grosgrain ribbon. Hand embroidered felt accents and detail work!

NOTE: This item is not meant for young children and prefers the touch of a "big kid" collector. This art doll can be played with, but gently.

Is it me or did this Pocket Zombie Santa maybe have a little too much special eggnog, if you know what I mean?

Anywho, as you can see poor Santa had a run-in with some naughty zombies. They gnawed on Santa's head and arm a bit before the reindeer could stomp their zombie butts into the ground where they belonged. But there's no keeping Santa from making his rounds! Granted with a shuffle and grunt, preferring brains and guts over milk and cookies these days but, hey, what can you do?

EDT Halloween Stalker Swap Strikes Again!

Here are the goodies I sent to Nitebyrd, my stalkee this year.

Pumpkin jingle bell earrings, a witch eraser, Halloween foam stickers, 4 zombie rubber ducks &, la piece de resistance, a Bloody Zombie Head Pillow Slip Cover complete with pillow! Which, let me tell you, was not easy to find a box for. I had smush the pillow a bit to make it all fit. Hopefully things didn't get too wrinkly on it's way to the coast.

The Bloody Zombie Head Pillow Slip Cover is 16"x16", Grey Woven with an envelope back. The zombie silhouette is black synthetic felt with hand stitched blood accents in cranberry, edge stitched in green to the cotton print background, and framed in 3/8" black satin ribbon, mitered corners and all.

Black Velvet Diva Capelet

This is probably the last one I'll do. Trying to get slippery, but lovely, lining onto velvet is a pain in the rear. Hell, anything to do with sewing velvet is a pain! But velvet's so pretty! I know. Sigh. Anywho...

Tiger Buddy Plush

Isn't he just the cutest little tiger? Twenty-two inches of squishy, fleecy fun. The 25 stripes and face were cut from soft synthetic felt and hand stitched into place. Crazy, I know, but it was to minimize the bulging of the fleece since it's stretchy and felt really is not.

It took me forever to finish him. I really do think he was unstitching himself so he could stay with me longer. But, he's finally done and on his way to his new home if he's not there already.

Ahoy, matey!

Check out the custom Bloomers I recently finished! I personally love them. This one was a bit of a challenge because the Skulls & Roses cotton print fabric is not easy to come by particularly where I live. Luckily I was able to snag some at a decent price online. Then, I realized I was completely out the black cluney lace I was going to use to trim these. But, hidden away in my lace stash was just enough of the black & white cluney lace you see here. I've had it so long I don't think it's made anymore. At least, I've yet to find more!

Even with the hiccups, or more like thankfully due to the hiccups, I was able to create a great pair of one-of-a-kind bloomers for a wonderfully patient (and repeat) customer!

Recent Custom Work

Let's see, I don't think I've shown off the custom headband I made for the lovely & talented Miss Connie Faye. It's purple, black & white skull print on one side & black brocade on the other.

I'm currently working on a Hob... erm, tiger buddy companion plush. This pic is before I started hand stitching, yes hand stitching, the stripes. I did my best to stay true to the pic but also not drive myself insane. Especially after the wrestling match I had with creating the pattern in the first place. Hopefully I'll be finishing this up either tonight or tomorrow!

No, I'm not selling these. It is a one-off for someone's Halloween costume.

No, I'm not releasing the pattern either, sorry.

And, I'm also working on a pair of pirate-y Bloomers! How awesome is this fabric and lace?

Next up: Matrix style coat for my hubby in black canvas & a dress for me in black cotton printed with red stars. Can't wait!

Zombie Party Girls

Just a couple of girls out for a nice night on the town but then Erin had to go and convince Teri to take a walk through the graveyard.

"It's a shortcut, I swear!"

That happened to be next to a toxic waste dump. First they lost their shoes in the muck. Then Erin stomps off in a tiff, pissed about her missing shoes.

There's a guy just standing at the edge of the graveyard staring at the toxic dump. Erin wobbled over --she'd already put back a few-- to tell him her woes and maybe sucker him into looking for her shoes. What does she get for it? He totally messed up her hair and got blood on her pretty dress! Jerk.

Teri, meanwhile, trips on a broken headstone and lands face first in some glowing green goo. As she's trying to get up, a bony hand erupts from the goo and starts scratching at her arms and face.

"Do you know how long it took to get my hair this cute, you asshat?!"

She wails on the arm a few time with a rock but it was already too late. Her stomach was growling and wasn't for brussel sprouts.

Men's movie & anime costume patterns

Thinking about Halloween costumes yet? You should be! Here's a couple patterns I just listed to help you along.

L to R pattern description and costume suggestions:

Row 1: Morpheus & Neo in Matrix Reloaded.
Neo's coat in the first movie was more a western style duster with a regular collar & 'V' insets on the shoulders. Morpheus' coat, if you want to be as accurate as possible, should be done in a black alligator skin-looking vinyl. But, that can be mighty pricey so you may just opt for a nice black vinyl.
The pattern suggests velcro closures. Bleh. If you prefer buttons, like I do, here's excellent instruction on how to do so: http://sewing.about.com/library/sewnews/library/aatech0703a.htm . Or, sew in a nice long zipper to go for that Skinny Puppy - Pro-test look! Word. (If you know the band & video you know what I'm talking about ;D)

Sherlock Holmes, Van Helsing, Full Metal Alchemist, Uryū Ishida
My hubby thinks the coat on the left (blue) looks Van Helsing but it would need some tweaking with lots of buckles, straps, top stitching galore and the back reshaped and topstitched. If you want to get as close as possible to the movie costume, anyway!
I think it would be an excellent beginning to a coat for an Uryū Ishida costume, from the anime Bleach, personally. It would also be a good start for a Full Metal Alchemist (another anime) military outfit.
The coat on the right is obviously a Sherlock Holmes style. The pattern even includes the sleuth cap. But if you're good at playing with patterns it could be turned into an Alucard, of the Hellsing anime, coat by shortening and attaching the front edges of the cape to sleeves inner seam rather than have it come all the way to the center front.

Row 2: Victorian travel/driving coats, Interview with a Vampire, Steampunk, Doctor Who
This pattern is a basic men's Victorian driving coat and it includes a pattern for your lady! We know how cold it get's in October here in NA so this would be perfect to throw over your Lestat, Louis or any other Vampire Chronicles character. Louis & Lestat wear something similar in the first movie, if you want to get picky.
And, of course, there's the every popular steampunk stylings. Are you a time traveling mad doctor? A Jules Verne type of adventurer? Well then, you need a coat, don't you?
Shorten the coat to the knee, make it out of brown wool with no top stitching and guess what you have? The coat for Tom Baker's Doctor Who, that's what!

Civil War, Victorian/Steampunk, Firefly
Here we have Civil War North & South uniforms. Confederate is on the left and Union is on the right. I can not say if these are historically accurate for reenactment but I'm betting they'd be a good place to start if you're wanting to make your own.
This pattern is Victorian era regardless and can be used to get you going on some nice steampunk outfits too.
Also, if you lengthen the one on the right to about the knee, stitch it up in brown suede, add wide leather cuffs (or faux if you prefer), don't forget the splits at the side seams aka gun flaps, and guess what you made? A Firefly Browncoat! The previous Victorian driving coat is also a good basis for a Firefly Browncoat.

MrsEvils' Giraffa Vampyrocamelopardis

Letter to MrsEvils:

I found this little guy wandering through my backyard. And, I believe this might be a new and previously unknown species: Giraffa Vampyrocamelopardalis! Why do I believe this is so, you ask? Well, the tiny, sucked-dry carcasses strewn about my yard, for one, and those deep red eyes I think are pretty good clues. Granted, I suppose a freak swarm of vampire bats could have done it. But, the little giraffe did come scratching at my door just before sunrise. Or, was it just sizing up the cats for breakfast? It also tends to suddenly be rather close by if you nick yourself with anything. Who knew something so small could move so quickly!

I'm not quite sure how Giraffa Vampyrocamelopardalis survive, being bright yellow and all, but maybe they just charm their victims with their cuteness. Or, maybe, after a nip to an ankle all one would ever see would be a slight yellow blur out of the corner of their eye before it even has a chance to register with the brain.

It's getting a bit frail being locked in my sewing room and it refuses food except for bloody bits of hamburger. Watch your fingers around this little bugger, is all I'm saying. Anyway I thought who better to take care of a mini, and possibly vampiric, giraffe but you? I know how much you love mini giraffe.

I ran into issues recently (June 2011) with the newer Myspace layout since they changed what they accept as code YET again *sigh*. I found that using centering on the text portions work fine but the object, the Etsymini itself, refuses to budge no matter what I tried. So, with a little experimenting I found that 5 columns fit perfectly into the wider sections of the new Myspace layout. If you are using the narrower sections of the Myspace layout for your Etsymini try using the 3 column Etsymini code below. That *should* work. In theory :)

Crazy Hair Days

April showers bring May flowers? Well, it's June and it's still raining which is giving me some serious "medusa" hair days --imagine booty length curly hair frizzed out and grabbing at everything. Rawr! So, because I'm tired of braiding and to keep my wild tresses from wrapping around piercings or trying to strangle me... I'm on a headband kick!

I have made a bunch of super awesome-riffic headbands for your lovely heads (and mine. Down, hair, down! *Whew*)

A handful --hairful?-- have already sold. Such as, Cherry Bombs & Bottle Rockets took off minutes after listing! Lucky for you, I have a duplicate or 2. Although, many of the fabrics are hard to find or discontinued so there will only be a very short run of these!

My headbands are made of cotton unless otherwise noted (some blends and even a silk blend). All are machine washable. And --the best part!-- they're reversible! 2 styles in 1, hot damn. Here's a sampling of them.

MrsEvils' Me Equivoque Contigo Dress - Pt 4

Hurray! The dress is done! Well it was done a while ago but my digicam batteries refuse to hold a charge for long so every time I was ready to take pics of course the batteries were dead. Plus, we're in the midst of closing on our first house evah! Squee! Needless to say, I've been just a wee bit distracted :D

Okay, okay, the dress. Right. Here are the last few "in progress" pics. Since I'm loading up on the pics in this post I'll keep them small yet clickable. So click away for a closer look!

L to R: 1) Hem, hem & more hem. 2) The delish Satin lining is hand stitched at the 14" back zipper. Interior satin loops make the straps removable. 3) Close up of adjustable/removable strap.

Wolf Bat for Dreadful Designs

It definitely was interesting working in a stretchy, 2 layer, semi-sheer, stripey industrial crazy goodness that was sent to me by DreadfulDesigns to transform and mix with some of my stash of wolfie faux fur. Hand stitching was more by feel than anything on the face and wings. And, Wolfie and I argued a bit but in the end it all worked out, don't you think?

MrsEvils' Me Equivoque Contigo Dress - Pt 3

The outer shell is done and the lining is cut. I freehand placed the velvet ribbon, made sure both sides lined up & hand stitched the bow for the front, ain't it perty?

The zipper has been conquered. Straps are done, which are now adjustable and removable. Pesky satin lining, I forgot how many pins you need to use to keep it stable. It's a great shade of red though!

Now if only I could stop getting distracted by shiny things & banana bread.

Hmm, what? Oh yes, the next pics will be of it all done. Callooh callay!

MrsEvils' Me Equivoque Contigo Dress - Pt 2

So, after making all my adjustments to the pattern (MrsEvils' Me Equivoque Contigo Dress - Pt 1 can be found here) I decided to change the casing on the boning. For one, plastic boning typically comes in bulky white casing. "But, Static", you ask, "it's on the inside so who will know?" Me, that's who!

I decided to use single fold black bias tape instead since it will be sandwiched between the outer cotton fabric and satin lining. Stable enough without all the bulk. Excellent. There is a little trick to it though. Cut the black bias tape in the lengths directed in the pattern. On one end, only, of each piece mark 3/8" up from the end and stitch straight across. Put the casings aside for later. You won't put the boning in the casings until after the casings are sew in place as directed in the pattern.

Oh, and if the plastic boning is curling up on you iron it to flatten it out. Use a low heat (my iron was on 1), you don't want to melt it. Place it on your ironing surface so that the curve of the plastic boning is bulging up toward you. Place the iron at center, while holding one end up so your bending that pesky curve in the opposite direction, then pull.Yes, pull the boning upward from under the flat iron. Do this a couple times until it straightens enough and then repeat for the other end. Remember to lift your iron occasionally so you don't burn your ironing surface! Just another reason to have your iron on LOW.

Hopefully the above tips haven't bored you to tears. For being so wonderful here's a sneak peek of the dress! I've cut all the pieces and pinned them to my dressform to double check that they line up the way that I wanted.

The pieces are just overlapped without the seam allowance tucked in. The top edge will drop a bit and the hem will come up 1.25". Time to cut the gorgeous red lining then sewing! Hurray!

MrsEvils' Me Equivoque Contigo Dress - Pt 1

~or~ How to turn McCall's 4450 pattern into an asymmetrical (short in front long in back) dress!

This is the first time I've drafted an asymmetrical dress. Mind you, I understand the concept. But knowing and doing are different dragons. So I hunted the interwebs for drafting tips but I could only find a couple of mentions of dresses with trains, which while close don't quite have the shape I was looking for, and the odd lopsided skirt. So dusting off the drafting knowledge I've squirreled away in my brain I just went with what looked right to me.

Keep in mind MrsEvils is adorably pocket-sized. Okay, MrsEvils is not all that much smaller than me but she is adorable. How could you not want to put her in your pocket? Alright I better stop before she kicks my butt ;D

I sent her here a rainbow of color options but she decided on red lining to go with the awesome fabric she sent me. Red. Deliciously bloody red. Ahem, err, excuse me. Here's the red color mockup:

There were a few tweaks to the M4450 pattern but I'm going to focus on the asymmetrical skirt portion here.

Before you ask, the pattern pieces might look odd because 1) I don't reinvent the wheel when I'm surrounded by mounds and mounds of collected patterns and 2) I snip & tape back the edges so I can use the patterns other sizes. Sneaky me. And the crappy pics are because they were quick snaps as I was working in the wee hours of the night. I was busy, okay? Jeez. Anywho, for quick reference, since I'm going into seamstrix mode here in a sec: CF = center front, CB = center back, SS = side seam, WL = waistline, hem edge = finished hem + 1.25" hem

Starting with the CF piece I measured down from the waistline and made a perpendicular line (pink chalk line) where the new hem edge was going to be.

Then I went to the CB piece. At the center back seam I marked a perpendicular line across the bottom of the pattern at the level of the new back hem edge.

Now to get the angled line between the two I subtracted the finished hem length of CF from CB. This is now my SS length.
Of course the one time I need seam allowance marks they're not on the pattern. Figures. So I marked the 5/8" seam allowance, between waist and hem, on all pieces and then pinned them together.
Next, at the SS, I measured down from the WL and made a small mark for the new SS hem edge.
On the new CF hem edge line I made a mark about 6" from the CF. Using a big metal ruler, I connected that mark to the SS mark and then continued the line until it hit the horizontal line I drew on the CB piece.
Now what to do with this big old zigzag? I use a varied form curve (like a french curve but a lot bigger) to smooth out the zig on the CF piece. Easy. The trickier part is the zag on the CB piece. For the CB I just used my elbow as a fixed point and swung my hand back and forth to lightly chalk a curve inside the zag (my old drafting teacher is probably having heart palpitations right now). I used my varied form curve to make sure it connected smoothly and drew the line in stronger using the varied form curve as a guide.

I briefly pinned it to my dressform to double check that I liked the shaped of the new hem, the pink chalk made it easy to see whether looking at the right or wrong side of the pattern. Yup, good. Time to cut! I'm hopeful that I'll need the pieces that I cut away so I was sure to write on each as to what pattern piece they corresponded to so I could always tape them back in place.

I made sure to get ALL of the pins out of the pattern pieces, gave them a quick press and...

2010 Holiday Cards

I recycled some old unused but out-of-date postcards (hubby's old band lineup) into Holiday Cards! They're fairly quick if you need some last minute cards/stocking stuffers and have some old postcards/cards laying around.

I searched for "christmas ornaments vector", found some I liked and arranged 4 of them in Photoshop. I then printed the 4 ornaments on colored construction paper, cut them about a 1/4" smaller than the post card (giving an 1/8" border) and used Modge Podge & a small foam brush to glue them in place over the front of the post cards. Stick them under a heavy book while they dry so they wouldn't curl up. If you don't weigh them down they will curl, as I learned the hard way with my first batch :p

The Holly is a removable pin! Which I found the directions for on marthastewart.com: directions & template

I used a single jingle bell (special ones have a Holly Spider too!) and tried different types of ribbon. Keep in mind double sided ribbon is easier to make the bows from than single sided. For the bows I used a 1.5" template I made out of cardboard scrap. Directions to make your own templates and a chart for multiple sizes here.

Once your cards are dry and your pins are done, on the cards about a 1/2" above the top of the printed ornament mark 2 dots horizontally an inch apart. If you don't have a hole punch that can reach, like moi, make a small 'x' with an Xacto blade and then gently poke a knitting needle (I used a size 9, 5.25mm), or something similar, through the 'x' to make the holes for the pin to go through.

Write your message on the back and you're done!

Cloud 9 Is Made of Stripey Socks

... because my friend and old roomy doesn't want me darning my holey old socks. But, but they're stripey and still have a *little* life left in them :'( Love you, Donna, thanks! All the sock pics are from SockDreams.com because my digicam batteries are still charging. They like to torture me. SockDreams has the best stock of stripey footy-leggy goodness. Evah.

And, the other package had a Voodoo Dude magnet (damn that's a strong little magnet!), a swirly black & red bat plaque, a black bat pin & and black cat tie tack pin. All thanks to a swap with the adorable Jinn aka DreadfulDesigns!

Again, this is Jinn's pic because my digicam is on strike. You'll just have to imagine the cuteness of the other items. Believe me, they are.

Aaaaaaand, there's still one more package that arrived yesterday! It is definitely awesome but I'll save it for another post. I'm sleepy and it going to be a part of a whole other kind of awesomeness. My digicam better be behaving by then!

Scott - 1) an actively running chainsaw, 2) a riled up hive an angry hornets, and 3) only *one* hand from someone else. Anything less than two is just a tease.

(It's like Jeopardy, in the form of a question please LOL So you mean, "Does Scott really run naked with a Zorro cape when he thinks no one is looking?")

Scott- Absolutely I do. Though even though I think no one is looking, I'm secretly hoping that they are.

Blacknick - Okay I'm going to badger Scott with two questions:

1) What music/muscians influenced Scott early in his career?

Scott - Very early on, my folks' collection of LP's from the 60's and 70's (Beatles, Steppenwolf, Creedence, Dr. Hook), lots of "oldies" radio when I was kid with Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, things passed to me from my big brother (Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guns N Roses) and bits I went out and found on my own (Stone Temple Pilots, The Clash, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains). And as far as playing bass goes, mountains of Robert DeLeo, Jeff Ament, Duck Dunn and Patrick Dahlheimer. There is of course far, far more - but that was just the starting point.

2) Who does Scott think had the better vocal talent Elvis or Roy Orbison?

Scott - Roy was the better vocalist. Elvis was the better entertainer.

Darien - Have you ever considered learning to play the bouzouki?

Scott - It's a pretty fascinating instrument. Never crossed my mind to take it up. Would be cool to pick up if things got to the point where all we were doing for a living was music, so there'd be time and resources to do it. Plus, it's just fun to say. "Bouzouki". Like a rocket launcher, but cooler. And more Greek.

Does the Flowbee give you nightmares?

Scott - Years of therapy and expensive pyschopharmacological treatment can't undo the damage that Flowbiephobia has done to me. Thanks a lot for bringing that up. Jerk.

Can I braid your hair into Viking pigtails?

Scott - Absolutely. Can I carry around a big Viking axe and raid coastal villages after you do?

David White - What are you hiding behind your hand?

Scott - A Mona Lisa smile. But without, you know, the charm or the class.

FaerydustPixy - Dear Scott, What would Maya say is your most annoying habit?

Scott - Tapping / playing drums on anything and everything, all the time, usually subconsciously. Yes, even in my sleep.

(Yes! Even to songs he doesn't like! The weird part though is that sometimes he'll keep time by rubbing his big toes against the "index" toes. He does it in his sleep too. That shit used to wake me up in the middle of the night. I'm used to it now.)

Do you sleepwalk?

Scott - I think I did once when I was like five years old. I'm way too light of a sleeper to sleepwalk these days. I do sometimes sleep-kitty-punt though, if the little fuzzy critters are camping out too close to my kickin' foot in bed.

Who is sexier: Freddy Mercury or David Bowie?

Scott - The Thin White Duke. Eight days out of the week. The man drips charisma all over the floor and leaves a trail of it behind him. Sure Freddy is awesome and had an amazing voice. But Bowie was Jareth. I mean, c'mon. Labyrinth fer Pete's sake!

ForeverFall - Dear Scott, What I want to know is this... What would you do if werewolves were real?

Scott - Teach them to hunt sparkly vampires.

Scott - The fact I have a ton of great friends here. And fried pickles.

Scott - Not in the least. I, for one, welcome our new mechanical overlords with open arms and a can of oil.

Nitebyrd - Zorro? Don't you think a Dracula cape would be more classy?

Scott - Dude, no way! That high-neck cape just doesn't sit right on me. Besides, if I do something completely hurr-derr in a Zorro cape I don't feel so bad. I'd really hate to besmirch the name of Vlad Dracula though.

Erin - Scott, if Maya were to make a plush version of you, what would be the signature touch that would really make it scream, "This is a plushie of SCOTT BOWEN, and not nobody else, fool!"?

Scott, how do you like your ideal grilled cheese to be made? (i.e. bread type, cheese, etc. - I'm an enthusiast of the grilled cheeses and need to know for a fake research paper I'm writing on a slice of Velveeta.)

Scott - Grilled cheese must absolutely be cooked just a *bit* too long so it's blackened ever so slightly (okay, lightly burned!), and this is the important part coming up. Seriously important. If you forget this part, you can just go home now and not bother. I mean it. Don't forget it. SERVE WITH HOT TOMATO SOUP! Grilled cheese + a bowl of tomato soup is nothing short of pure and utter win.

Basically, people got to ask her man anything and he had to answer. No, really, you don't say "No" to Erin. So, I thought it would be fun to try it on my blog. See this guy?...

It's either that look or an "innocent" who-me? look. Mhmm. Who needs the Comedy channel when I've got him? Sigh.

Anywho, ask him something. Anything. He'll answer. Just like Henry can't resist the gentle caress of Erin's pillow over his face neither can my Scott refuse the smoldering eyes of his beloved Stabberican gypsy (Me. With pointy objects).

Just a friendly holiday reminder.

Friend ≠ free stuff

Just saying. That symbol (≠) means does NOT equal just so we're all on the same page here. Granted sometimes it does if that creative friend is feeling generous, can afford it and so on. But, to just expect, or worse demand, freebies from your creative friends is just plain tacky. Musicians, artists, seamstrix, etc work hard at what they create and deserve to get paid for it too. Support them, love them, tell your other friends how awesome they are. They are your friend after all, right?

I haven't had it happen to me recently because, well, I'm a hermit and I also know how to tell people "No". Although I am seeing quite a bit of it going around (thank you FB).'Tis the season to be greedy? I've seen demands for free CDs from musicians. I've seen whining for free plushies, jewelry and accessories from those who make them. Yeah, yeah, all in "jest" I'm sure. How about instead of being "funny" you buy that item? If you really want it and don't have the funds at least offer to trade something in return for it. That'll get taken a lot better than just demanding a freebie because you're supposedly friends. Or worse, vague acquaintances. We all like free stuff, and maybe your creative friends will offer up freebies when they can afford to give things away, but your friends have to eat and pay bills too.

Creative types, if you see your friends pulling this sort of thing smack 'em. Or give 'em a good falcon punch/ monkey-steals-the-peach. Which ever is most appropriate or needed.

Astaire, the Hypno-Bunny

Astaire likes to smile. A lot. And, stare... and stare and stare and stare until it's enemies fall hopelessly into those neon pink eyes and onto that wicked carrot blade. So, obviously, it's best to be friends with this cute little black bunny. Take Astaire home and give lots of love that way you'll always have someone watching your back.

EDT Year Long Bday Swap Gifts Pt 3

My third Bday Swap Gift arrived in a ginormous box and I couldn't even imagine what it could be. I peeked at the return address to see that it was from the lovely CauldronCraftMinis, the fine purveyor of miniatures, herbs & oddities. Ooh. So I grabbed up my nearest scissors and quickly cut through the tape to find...

A herb smothered candle taper, an elegantly witchy little broom, pony fall, herbs, herbs and more herbs, bats to hang from my ceiling, a lovely steampunk necklace, a coffin box complete with vampire bat and stuffed with the aptly named Graveyard Dirt oatmeal facial scrub. Wowza! Oh and the toe tag card is just hilarious. Apparently I died in a sewing machine accident! Maybe I should look into that little electrical issue my one machine has after all?

Part of a weird dream I had the other night...

There were 5 or 6 tabby kittens in the bathtub, water dripping from the faucet. I went to find the mama cat and found her in the next room. By the time I brought her back into the bathroom somehow the drain had shut and the tub was half full with yellowish water. And, instead of kittens there were now mewling blue eyed, balloon-like baby heads. Most had flung themselves out of the tub and into the sink or onto the counter across the narrow bathroom. Two were left in the tub. One managed to fling itself out as I moved forward to get them, the other just sank. So I rushed over and scooped it out, plopping it into the sink. The mama cat jumped up to check on them as if it was perfectly normal for her kittens to have turned into blue eyed balloon baby heads about the size of grapefruits.

Kittens and baby heads... what the hell does that mean? Sigh. Par for the course really. I have the strangest damn dreams. My hubby hardly ever remembers his so he finds mine fascinating. And, no, I am not under the influence of anything. My dreams really are this strange sometimes all on their own. I guess it's all a part of being a creative type? ;D

EDT Year Long Bday Swap Gifts Pt 2

Yesterday I just had a feeling I had better check my mail and I'm happy I did! There was a brown paper wrapped box waiting for me from ForeverFall. It was sealed with some seriously industrial tape but with a little "help" from my kitties I got it open. Yes, I'm one of those people that undoes the tape on wrapping paper. Hey, it's all about recycling. Anyway, while the kitties decided who would get nesting rights in the paper I sawed away at more tape on the box. Which, I might add, was conveniently labeled as to which side to open. Of course it was in my lap upside down.

Within the mounds of black tissue paper I found this...

Isn't she lovely? She even has crazy hair like mine! Her name is Sideshow Siouxsie and her little buddies in her hair are Trilla & Trixie, on the left, and Mr. Obselete: the Man With No Arms, on the right.

EDT Year Long Bday Swap Gifts Pt 1

My birthday is the 23rd of this month. I'll be, um... 29 (again). The ever so awesome AgonysDecay organized a Year Long Bday Swap for our team which of course I couldn't pass up. Each of us sends out 3 gifts throughout the year and then when our bday rolls around we receive 3 gifts. It's a secret swap so you never know what you're going to get or from whom! But of course they're always awesome because they're from EtsyDarkTeam members so you can't go wrong.

In my last post you got to see what I sent out this month, now you get to see what I received. My first birthday gift (of three) arrived the other day from CoffinCritters!

A Cemetery Rose scented soy candle (that didn't make it into the pic in my excitement) with moss, a ghostly kaleidoscope, bubbles, a handmade skull jar with cemetery dust for luck (and boy could I use some!), an off-white round lidded box painted with black stripes on the lid and embellished with a skull key, a voodoo dude bottle cap charm and a small purple painted box with black stripes and stitches!

I'm going to have to find a good spot in my livingroom to display all my birthday goodies. It already smells delish in here thanks to the Cemetery Roses candle and it's not even lit! Be sure to check out the awesomeness of CoffinCritters for yourself at her shop. Now to freak out the kitties with bubbles *muhuhahaha* Thank you, CoffinCritters!

Ebil Bun Bunnee was created as part of the EtsyDarkTeam's Year Long Birthday Swap and now lives with Nitebyrd far away where he can't poke and tease my other critters. This naughty bunny has issues with authority but should behave well enough as long as there is an ample stash of carrots laying about.

Devious Kitten and Ebil Pumpkin

A kitten padded through the pumpkin patch unseen except for the occasional glow of his neon green eyes. The vines thicken until a pumpkin almost the size of Kitten's head blocked the way. He figured the easiest way around would be over so he hunkered down, gave his booty a little wiggle and executed a most graceful little hop to clear it. At least he thought he was being graceful until his paw caught in a vine. As undignified as a face-plant in the vine tangled dirt can be he managed to bounce up like he meant to land like that. That's when he heard a rustling snicker behind him. The kitten immediately spun about and made himself look as big as possible. There was nothing there but the pumpkin. Deciding the snickering was really only the wind the kitten proceeds to kick dirt on the offending gourd.

"Hey! Do you mind? You got dirt in my eyehole!"

"A-a-a talking pumpkin?!", the kitten hissed.

"Well aren't you just Captain Obvious. I could say the same, you know. A-a-a talking kitten?!", the pumpkin teased while flicking dirt out of it's eyehole with a long twisted vine.

The kitten glared at the pumpkin and decided now was a good time to clean and straighten his back fur.

"Look, sorry for tripping you but I've no one to talk with in this dank patch. I mean look around, they all just sit there like a bunch of lumps studiously ignoring one another. I mean, what's the point of being able to talk if you just go about ignoring everyone and thing?"

"So...", the kitten mushroomed and then settled ramrod straight, "All the veggies here can talk?"

"No just the pumpkins. At least here in this patch. Something to do with a curse. Or something silly like that. And technically we're fruit not veggies. Anyway, it doesn't matter. They", the chatty gourd waves a vine around, "won't say a word. Not even a good day or howdedo. Eyes shut and mouths closed, we're just plain old pumpkins here. Lazy lumpkins more like."

"Well at least some know when they should be quiet." the kitten sniffed looking about.

"Oh come on. Don't be like that. I said I was sorry. I'm just bored is all. Maybe we could work something out? You get me out of here and I'll make it up to you."

"Pff, what can you do? Can you turn yourself into a pie? A nice warm pie with a saucer of milk would be great right about now."

"Alright, enough of that. " The pumpkin scratches where his chin would have been if he had one in thought. "First off I'm Ebil Pumpkin. The others named me that though I don't see why. Just because I get up to mischief now again." Ebil Pumpkin paused dreamily for a moment before shaking himself out of his reverie. "You can just call me Ee. You know like "eek" but with out the 'k'." Chuckling at his lame joke, "And you are...?"

"Devious. Devious Kitten. But you can call me Dee."

"Well, Dee... Dee & Ee, I like that. Well, Dee, you do look like the sneaky sort", which Dee immediately harumphed at but didn't put much heart behind, "so I suppose I could serve as a lookout, and I am good at tangling up feet as you might have noticed."

"You're not helping yourself, you know. You're lucky I'm bored too or I'd be so out of here. Cans to dump, dogs to spook and all that."

"Mmhmm. I can be good company.", hurrying to continue past the slit eyed glared Dee shot him, "I know, I know. I can be a tad chatty but I can be quiet when needed. Really I can."

It was Dee's turn to say, "Mmhmm."

"I can, uh, scowl with the best of them. See? Grr." Dee sighs heavily "Ok, fine. I'm lonely, alright. Happy now? Please just get me out of here. I'm losing my mind to sheer and utter boredom of it all. I need to get out and see the world before I wither away to nothing. I can tell you all sorts of stories and we could be friends. Everyone needs a friend now again right? Oh and you can hide things in me. Look at all the space." Ee opens his mouth wide for Dee to peer in and it does seem to go on forever.

After a good long thoughtful stare Dee sighs, "I'm so going to regret this.", and hefts the surprising light Ee onto his back. As Ee wraps his vines around to keep himself steady Dee wobbles a bit. "Not around the middle! Don't you know anything about cats? Sheesh."

"Oh right, sorry." says Ee as he resettles himself like a backpack. Dee shakes his head, as he takes off into the night, at the thought of a kitten toting around talking pumpkin but there are stranger things. Stranger things by far.

MrsEvils Rocks Your Head & Eats Your Brains

MrsEvils sends me some of the best goodies! Not only do I have a couple of her awesome hair flowers (Spider Flower below), a crossstitch kit (which sadly I've yet to find time to try) and a Stabby magnet among other things, but she sent me a sample of her new zombie eyeshadow line. A beautiful dark green eyeshadow named after me! Static!

"Static" is a dark shimmering green that reminds me of the darkest metallic green of a beetle.

My photography skills just don't do it justice. I used it a bit sparingly, being the first time I was trying it out. That and, well, I couldn't find my applicators and used a q-tip instead. I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly it went on and how easy it was to blend. It goes great with a dark gold eyeshadow, as you can see! Also, no allergic reaction. My skin is fairly sensitive and my allergies act up if even so much as think of something I'm allergic to so this is a big deal to me.

When I asked her why green, she told me my photoshop self portrait was her inspiration... *blush*

My zombies, they are taking over!

Rommie the Not-Sock Zombie Monkey now lives on the US East Coast, another Not-So-Fresh Zombie is nibbling his way through the UK & a Lil Zombie Jibber is biting toes in Australia!

If you look real close you can see Lil Zombie Jibber (bottom right) has got himself a little soul patch (wee goatee) & a labret like his larger human counterpart! He's also missing his foot which was apparently gnawed off in his attempted escape from the other zombies. Didn't do him much good did it?

August is custom month?

It's seems that August is indeed a custom requests month. Not that I'm complaining! Here's a look at some of what I've been up to:

TriColor Maneki Neko Ornament - Hand stitched felt, bell & satin ribbon...

Steampunk Wedding Garter - Striped silk/rayon, cluney lace, satin ribbon & a screwhead/bolt button...

And, two more applique similar to the one above - Satin brocade, jacquard & a whole lot of stitching. No embroidery machine used, this was all done on a 50+yr old Pfaff sewing machine.

I've got a couple others items in the works right now but they're a secret. For now. I'll share them as soon as I can though!

Random vent: Responsible = screwed

No one need read this. I'm just venting.

I am beyond fed up. My Etsy shops sales have trickled to literally nothing. I thought about closing them but they're my only possibility for income right now. I thankfully got signed up for legit online surveys, which pop up 2-4 a month, just to be sure to cover my fees there. This economy has really put a huge damper on the job market, add in the May Day flooding that thrashed Nashville's businesses and homes, and well, I think you get the picture. Of what feels like a bazillion resume/applications that I've sent out I've had one phone interview and less than a handful of "resume received" emails. I'm either overqualified (yes, I know, not legal but it still happens), qualified but don't have some expensive course's certificate, or I'm possibly to much of a "city slicker" with my resume being chockfull of jobs in NY & CA. I even applied for a bunch of FEMA jobs, among others, through the local gov't job bank and never heard a peep back. After the song and dance they make you do (search online, go in person to the office, talk to a couple different people then they take and forward your resume) I thought surely I'd get some work now. I came prepared, dressed nice, slapped on the smile, had a nice big list of job numbers. Nothing. Thankfully my hubby finally found something a couple weeks ago thanks to a good friend of ours. We were seriously days away from packing up the kitties and moving into our van. His finally finding a job is good because it keeps us from falling further behind in bills, etc but it's unfortunately not helping us get ahead. Ergo, I need a job or one of us needs to become famous. Famous rock star (he) or seamstrix (me) would be really nice but I'll settle for a decent job.

This is where responsible = screwed. A part of why we moved down here for the better cost of living so we could save (apartments are half as much and twice, or more, the size of NY/CA apartments), buy a nice little house and finally friggin have kids. You know, so our kids wouldn't have to grow up in a little box of an apartment, ride the subway alone at 10yrs old or worry about getting mugged/stabbed/shot by school kids.

So back to the present, with jobs being mighty scarce I looked into the possibility of getting gov't help as our last resort. I keep hearing, "it's out there, you just gotta look", so I did. Well apparently since my hubby and I want to work (*gasp* I know) and he at least managed to find something, and we have no kids because we're trying to be responsible adults, we don't qualify for jack diddly worth of anything. But if I turn into a baby factory tomorrow then we could get the help. What the hell? My self-sufficient mentality made it hard enough to look into help from anyone but then to see it wasn't even available... Maybe I missed something but have you ever had to wade through gov't websites? It made my brain hurt and my eyes cross but I did it. I filled out so many questionnaires and read FAQs galore to no avail.

I've just got to keep on keeping on, I guess, and hope I'm not a senior citizen before I see the simplest of my dreams come true. Presently I've just got to deal with my vicious cycle of getting stressed out over all this nonsense which shuts down my creativity which stresses me out even more. This of course is no good since, like I said, my Etsy shops are currently my only job. Other than cleaning up after two furballs and a husband ;) It's getting harder and harder to keep the shops going with zero budget but I'll do it as long as I can because, everything else aside, it's what I love doing. Just like my hubby and his music.

Well I've got 21 multi-colored Batling bodies in front of me just squeaking to be completed. I don't know why it's 21, that's just what came about the other day along with a handful of Neko bits. Better get to stitching!

These little guys are called Grumble Stars. Grr is on the bottom left in black (she's the boss of this trio), Meh is bottom right in grey & Hmph is at the top there in green. They are approximately 7" tall, squishy, fleecey, and full of cranky adorableness. The perfect size for beaning your loved ones upside the head when they tick you off. Or, just for the fun of it ;)

These 3 won't be available though. They now live with AgonysDecay. Hmph was singled out and adopted by her special kitty. Hmph is now resigned to his fate of being carried around, snuggled and loved.

Other Stars will be available! If you'd like to see a specific expression let me know! I currently can make them in white, light grey, charcoal, light pink, hot pink, and purple.

Flood my soul a coffee dreg - supersize

Sorry I've been gone so long! First there was the job hunting, then the flooding and now I'm still job hunting.

Okay so since a lot people have asked, I'm posting about the "May Day Flood" and the rains since. Firstly, we're okay! We were without electricity for two days but the water stayed on, thankfully, even though one of the water treatment plants flooded. Also we couldn't leave our place for an entire day because we were literally an island. Every exit out of our complex was flooded. Our surrounding area and other parts of Nashville were not so lucky.

Here's a picture of what happens when it pours down on us, the retaining wall in our parking lot turns into a waterfall...

Notice how it goes out into the middle of the road on the right? Glad we're up high because this was just after about maybe 15 minutes of rain. There's a hill to the left under the "swimmin' hole" so the street could only fill so much before making a nice little river down the hill.

I didn't personally get video --I'm not that crazy to go out there!-- but there are plenty on youtube like the building that meandered down the I24. We've still having heavy thunderstorms on and off but so far nothing like the beginning of the month. Whatever happened to "April showers bring May flowers"? Apparently it's now "April, nice and warm, brings May thunderstorms"!

So as I said, I am mundane job hunting but I'm still stitching. Granted I can't seem to finish anything lately, but I am working on whittling down the pile of 1/2 done stitchings. Really I am.

Well I'm off to get a drop of sun before it decides to hide behind storm clouds again. Yes, I can go in the sun! For a minute or two ;) Then back to scouring the job boards and maybe some more stitching.

I just finished these lovely custom Cotton Velvet Bloomers for the wickedly wonderful MrsEvils. I don't have enough yardage left to remake these so she is definitely one lucky lady that just so happens to have a Capelet to match.

And, I finally got around to listing these two below. Huzzah!

My usual design (left) and a pair in the style of the Civil War era (right). The fabric and stitching are not to period on the Civil War styled ones though or it would have taken forever and a day to make them. Never you mind that it took that long to list them. Also they are completely, um, vented *teehee*. See the listing for a full description if you don't know what that means.

These two pairs of Bloomers are some of the last of my 1" black & white striped fabric so you won't be seeing others like these unless I get lucky and hunt some more down at a reasonable price! EtsyDarkTeam's Year Long Birthday Swap, Pt 2: IllustratedInk

As I mentioned in my previous post, I got to create for two of my EtsyDarkTeam mates. My second Birthday Swap gift was for IllustratedInk.

IllustratedInk is a fan of tattoo art and Dia de los Muertos items so I made her a 8" x 5.5" El Corazon patch. It was free-motion stitched on a Pfaff 230 with a little help from the embroidery functions on the arrow. I took my inspiration from the El Corazon card in the spanish game of Loteria.

It's done on black brocade with red, yellow & blue stitching and has a red satin ribbon border. It can either be framed ~or~ ironed onto almost any fabric item since I backed it with Wonder Under.

I'm still loving the popup bat idea so I made IllustratedInk a similar card. Again, the template for the popup bat came from here.

Too bad I have to wait until September to find out what I get! I'm sure it will be awesome.

EtsyDarkTeam's Year Long Birthday Swap, Pt 1: SkeletalDropkick

I'm a part of a another cool swap with EtsyDarkTeam, the Year Long Birthday Swap. I've created for two of my awesome team mates so far.

First up is SkeletalDropkick who is a fan of anime and pandas, among other things. So I dug into my felty goodness and stitched her up an anime panda! Which has been named... Panda Hotep. Yes, an excellent name.

The sign can be taken out of his hand and other things put in. Like a flower or maybe a small cocktail sword. What were you thinking? ;) At just over 4" tall he can be carried around in a pocket or hung on a ornament hook from the loop on the back of his head. Hotep has decided to watch over Dropkick's car.

I used textured burgundy card stock for the card, origami paper for the bat popup, glued tiny gold stars for the eyes and of course I had to use my bat-fetti. I found the bat popup template here if anyone else wants to try it out. There are a bunch of other really cool free popup templates there too. Note: I cut out and glued an extra piece onto the bat popup to cover the face so the only white is the teeth.

Happy Year of the Tiger and I hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day! With this being the beginning of a kitty year of course I had to make some kitty-esque items... kitty Batlings, that is.

I have also added a Maneki Tora (aka Lucky Tiger) to my Neko series.

This Maneki Tora is already spoken for but I'll gladly stitch up a custom one if requested. I plan to add some to my Etsy shop in the near future once I get through the pile of critters that are already clambering across my desk!

My Creepy Valentine

So another EtsyDarkTeam swap has come to pass, My Creepy Valentine. Mine didn't turn out exactly "creepy" but it included Betty Page! No macaroni either, sorry.

So in this swap we could choose to do just a card or a gift & card. I left the option open and got gift & card for CoffinCritters. I decided to make her a Cherub ornament that looked similar to her with Betty Page bangs & blue-grey eyes.

Ooh, Cherub booty again!

I then decide to do a simple collage inside box that had the front side unglued so it would drop down and double as a card. Of course I had to try doing this myself. So I found a template, made a couple mods & voila!:

Oh Holidays!

I made many of the gifts we gave this year: small tote bags for everyone made from recycled upholstery samples and filled with goodies, 5 pillow covers for the mother who of course chose my most expensive fabrics (it's ok I still love ya), fleece hand embroidered hats for the 2 older nieces, and elf shoe ornaments.

Same hat in both pics, the sakura flower is reversible!

We did purchase a few things like DVDs for my brother in law & father in law and an art set for the oldest niece. The art set was full of pencils, markers, crayons, etc in a carry case on sale for less than $4. I couldn't rightfully pass that up! The rest of our gift giving was traded for with some my awesome EtsyDarkTeam mates. Extra special big thanks to AgonysDecay for the amazing soaps. I sent a set of Day of the Dead soaps to my mom and a big cameo soap to my sister but it was claimed by her daughter because "it's a princess soap". My niece then announced that she must now take a bath! Too damn cute.

We spent Christmas Eve/Day with my husband's family once again. We had fun if not much sleep. We got to see 2 of our nieces that are sprouting like beans, the sis & brother in law and hung out with the ever elusive father in law. We ate way too much but it was oh so good. And apparently my father in law enjoyed the banana bread I made for him and my brother in law since he nicked a piece of my brother in law's even though he got an entire loaf to himself!

We got some great gifts not the least of which were Alice in Chains tickets. Hells yeah, Alice in Chains! And then there are the gifts from my father in law which are always fun. I got universal Waite tarot cards (to compliment my glow in the dark Ouija board from last year) among other things, and my husband got a no-one-in-particular pharaoh plaster bust which is extremely funny since we were just discussing how one might go about becoming a god-king.

And of course I can't leave out the tea, mounds of chocolate, and jelly bellies. Coldstone flavored Jelly Bellies are delicious!

Elf Shoe Ornaments!

Need cute & quick ornament or gift? How about an Elf Shoe Ornament? I was looking for a quick but cute ornament to give this year and this is it!

This design is not by me, but it's so cute I had to share since it is a free & shareable pattern. Here's where I found it: http://allsorts.typepad.com/allsorts/2007/11/ears-to-your-el.html

I resized the jpg pattern (which you can get from the link above) and made mine 4.25in / 10.8cm long, measuring flat from heel to pointy toe on the Sole piece. Note, cutting 2 of each pattern piece will give you a pair of Elf Shoes. I cut one of each piece out of red, one of each out of green, and then mixed the pieces to get the ornaments above. I used Dark Green & Cranberry synthetic Felt, Dark Gold Glossy Thread and a simple whip stitch, Gold tone Jingle Bells on jump rings, a loop of Black Ribbon is straight stitched at the heel to put the hook through and matte silver toned 'S' hooks (wish I had gold tone!) to hang them.

You can do a blanket stitch, add more embellishments, use different colors, double layer in contrast colors to make it even sturdier & "flashier", etc. I made myself keep them as simple as possible so I don't spend forever on them and then not have them ready for Christmas.

Having the twisted sense of humor that we do, my husband suggested making a severed foot or bloody sock to stick out of the shoes for that "dark" feel but, um, I don't think the family will get it. They'd probably call in the men that bring you the extra long sleeved buckling white jackets that are so NOT meant as a fashion statement, if you know what I mean. I am considering embroidering initials on them though but that will have to wait until they're all done. That's nice and "normal" right? We'll see, we'll see.

The Zombie Hand Puppet is completely hand cut, stitched & painted. He is the first of many to come hopefully and it the "poster zombie" for my upcoming Zombie Hand Puppet pattern I hope to have for sale soon-like. The Neck Warmer was serged on my little Bernette & line by line embroidered on my vintage Pfaff 230 sewing machine (love that machine!).

I had a lot of fun making the Hand Puppet & Neck Warmer. After a couple failed attempts I finally figured out what the heck I wanted to make for her. I can't wait to see what everyone else made and I'll be sure to share what I receive!

Static's Adventures in Baking

Ok I can create damn near anything I put my mind to in the sewing room but when it comes to the kitchen, well... let's just say me and stove top cooking are definitely not friends. But, I have come to find that baking can actually be enjoyable! Aside from the eating part of course. I've had my share of "ugly cakes" and shortcakes that didn't come out quit how I wanted but they were all still tasty!

Over the holiday weekend I got my mother-in-law's recipe for Banana Walnut Bread out of my sister-in-law who inherited our mother-in-law's recipe box (I will get all of those baking recipes at the least some day, I will!) and yesterday I made two small loaves (8"x3" tins).

I was only able to get a picture of one of them because my husband and I devoured the first one. It wasn't as sweet as perfectly overripe bananas can make it (because we wanted Nanner Bread now) so I rubbed a bit of honey on top. Scott was heeheehee-ing over at his computer and ate every last bit I put in front of him so I knew I did okay. Not exactly like his mom's, he said, but close. For my first attempt at it I'd say that's a pretty high compliment! I didn't even burn it, yay.

The next batch will have choco-chips. Yeeesssss.

The Lolita outfit is done, the new owner is happy, all is well this evening.

There are actually 2 more pieces to this outfit, an under skirt which is similar to the over skirt but slightly longer with an elastic waist & a medium sized hair bow made of the lace. In my rush of excitement of completing the outfit I forgot to take pictures of those pieces :( But, that will be remedied when I get the promised "in action" pictures.

Now, I'm off to make Starlets & other holiday goodies! A seamstrix' work is never done.

Lolita Outfit, Secrets of the

So in answer to Yve's query of "Did you make this up out of your head or did you have a pattern?"

Short answer? No, yes and then some. Long answer...

I was shown a pic of a Gothic Lolita outfit and asked if I could make something similar. After a bit of hemming and hawing I said yes. I mean I went to school for this sort of thing! Which my husband was so kind to point out "that was like 15 years ago". Shush. So anyway! I am a pattern & book fiend so anytime I need a refresher I can bust out any amount of reference from the overflowing tubs in my closet or pull something off my shelves.

I two-third to three-quarter drafted the pattern which you can seen in the left of this image hanging from the door.

Rather than start from absolute scratch (which I can do but why reinvent the wheel?) I made a copy of a Butterick pattern's (4154) basic princess line bodice and graded it down a couple sizes since the gal this is for is pixie sized. I then added the double breasted extensions to the front, redrafted the collar, drafted the gathered tail for the bodice, added 10 loops to the the back for lacing.

And we can't forget that the bodice has 14 buttons (only 7 buttonholes though, 2 sneaky snaps underneath), has a massively gathered tail, full lining, tailored sleeves and gobs of lace.

*Deep breathe* Oh, I'm not done yet.

The lace started life as 4" wide embroidered scallop eyelet lace that I split down the center for this project, minutely gathered and applied to every edge. The skirt is 3 yards wide and will be gathered down to fit a flat 25" waistband!

*Whew* so there you have it. The secrets of the Lolita Outfit ;) It's starting to look like something one of Yve's dollies would wear huh? More pics soon!

I've added the final piece's buttons and lace temporarily because it's easier for me to show my ideas than explain them :D. That, and I can try out any tweaks in trim, etc before I get to the good stuff.
